For many people, Legos are fun toys to play with, but for one enterprising Andorran teen they’re vital to his independence.

David Aguilar, who was born without a right forearm, has constructed a remarkably complex robotic prosthetic arm with the bricks. after being born without a right forearm due to a rare genetic condition.

The 19-year-old bioengineering student, who was born without the limb because of a rare genetic condition, is incredibly on his fourth prosthetic model. His ultimate ambition is constructing affordable robotic limbs for those needing them, reported Reuters.

“As a child I was very nervous to be in front of other guys because I was different,” said Aguilar. “But that didn’t stop me believing in my dreams.”

As early as 9, the plastic Legos became the building blocks for his first simple artificial arm, and each new iteration allows for more movement capability than the preceding one.

“I wanted to … see myself in the mirror like I see other guys, with two hands,” said Aguilar, who only uses the plastic arm only occasionally as he’s self-sufficient without it.

The latest models are marked MK followed by the number — a shoutout to superhero Iron Man and his MK armor suits. The comic book and film protagonist’s alter ego Tony Stark constructed his own mechanical gear.

A year ago, Aguilar built a functional, yellow-and-red robotic arm and electronic motor that allows for bending at the elbow.

His goal after graduation is to create affordable prosthetics.

“I would try to give them a prosthetic, even if it’s for free, to make them feel like a normal person because what is normal, right?” said Aguilar.
